TEHRAN -- Iran’s former chief nuclear negotiator Hassan Rowhani said on Wednesday that all countries should support the nuclear deal between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

“To establish confidence and prepare the ground for negotiations, all countries should safeguard the recent agreement between Iran and the agency,” Rowhani told German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the German Foreign Ministry in Berlin.
Under the August 21 deal, the IAEA and Tehran agreed on a timetable for addressing the ambiguities about Iran’s nuclear activities.
Rowhani and Steinmeier insisted on the need to create a healthy atmosphere for talks on Iran’s nuclear dossier.
Pointing to Iran’s constructive role in the region, Rowhani, who is the Supreme Leader’s representative at the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), stated that Iran’s influence should be used to help establish security in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Noting that there is no guarantee that Iran will be supplied with nuclear fuel if it gives up its uranium enrichment program, he said the problems that have arisen during the construction of the Bushehr nuclear power plant compel the Islamic Republic to become self-sufficient in the production of nuclear fuel.
Germany’s top diplomat lamented the lack of progress in the nuclear talks between the 5+1 group (five permanent Security Council members plus Germany) and Iran.
Steinmeier described Iran’s initiative to resolve the remaining nuclear questions as a “positive step”, saying proper conditions should be created for meeting the goal.

In order to help resolve the crises of the Middle East, Europe should adopt realistic stances and respect nations’ rights, Rowhani, who is also the chairman of Iran’s Center for Strategic Studies, said during a meeting with the German chancellor’s advisor on international and security affairs in Berlin on Wednesday.
During the visit, which took place at the invitation of Germany’s Korber Foundation, Rowhani conferred with the German chancellor’s advisor about regional and international issues, including Iran's nuclear program, and addressed a meeting of German MPs and other political figures.
On Iran’s nuclear program, Rowhani said, “The 5+1 group should clarify its objective in this case. If its aim is to deprive Iran of its inalienable right to uranium enrichment, such a goal is irrational and illegal and can not be realized. But if its objective is to verify the non-diversion of Iran’s nuclear program, as is sometimes said, such a goal can certainly be realized, and the Islamic Republic of Iran is prepared to cooperate in this regard, just as it was prepared before.”
The German official said Berlin wants to see peace and stability established in the Middle East and emphasizes the need to find a diplomatic solution to the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program.
“As a powerful country in the region, the Islamic Republic of Iran can play a constructive role in all Middle Eastern developments,” he added
