India not giving up on Iran gas pipeline deal

Indian Union Minister for Science and Technology, Kapil Sibal said the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal would not impact the multibillion-dollar Iran gas pipeline project as the two were not connected.

The UPA government was in favor of the project and was pursuing it, he said reacting to a question from reporters on whether the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal would impact the Iran gas pipeline deal.
Sibal said the two were not connected and the government was in favor of the Iran gas pipeline project.
""Who said we are giving up on the deal? We are supporting the deal with Iran,"" he said.
The government was still pursuing negotiations on the matter, Sibal said in reply to a question alluding to a statement by the Iran government that it would not wait indefinitely for India's decision on participation in the project.
Iran had warned that it would finalize the multibillion-dollar gas pipeline deal with Pakistan and not wait indefinitely for India's decision.
The 2,600km-ong pipeline is expected to cost 7.4 billion dollars according to Iranian projection could be completed by 2010.
