Larijani resigns his post as national security council chief
Tehran Times Political Desk

TEHRAN - Ali Larijani has resigned his post as Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) secretary, government spokesman Gholam-Hossein Elham said on Saturday.

“Larijani had submitted his resignation many times before, but only this time the president accepted it,” Elham told reporters at his weekly press briefing.

According to Elham, Larijani had said he wanted to resign and focus on other political activities.

He said Larijani’s resignation will not affect Iran’s principled nuclear policy.

Larijani acted as Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator and the SNSC chief.

As the representative of the Supreme Leader at the SNSC he will still exercise his influence on the country’s nuclear issue, he added.

“The Islamic Republic’s policy regarding the nuclear issue is clear, powerful, and unwavering, and changes in managements will not cause any disturbance in implementing these policies,” Elham noted.

Larijani and European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana were scheduled to meet on October 23 in Rome.

The spokesman said the Deputy Foreign Minister for European and American Affairs Saeed Jalili will soon take over as the SNSC secretary.
