Larijani calls for directs talks between Iran and 5+1 group
Tehran Times Political Desk

TEHRAN - Former nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani suggested here on Monday that Iran and the five permanent members of United Nations Security Council plus Germany should hold face-to-face talks so that the 5+1 group can directly ask questions about Iran’s nuclear program.

No time should be wasted on pre-negotiation meetings and they should ask Iran their questions through direct negotiation, which would be the best solution, Larijani told students at a gathering at Tehran University.

He also described European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana’s remarks after his meeting with Iran’s current nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili as unacceptable.

“I expected more, and therefore I am disappointed,” Javier Solana said after talks with Jalili.

Former Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) secretary Larijani said internal disputes should not be mixed up with national security issues, and both reformists and conservatives agree on this.

Pointing to the recent U.S. National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) report, Larijani stated, “I believe that the government has adopted a proper strategy for dealing with the nuclear issue, and the NIE report showed that Iran’s statements were true.”

The U.S. intelligence agencies’ acknowledgment that Iran has no nuclear weapons program was very important, he added, saying, “A country that referred Iran’s nuclear dossier to the UN Security Council and caused many problems for our country has admitted that it was mistaken.”

Nevertheless, the U.S. continues to pressure Iran as before, which is unjustifiable, he pointed out.

The fact that Iran’s nuclear dossier is still in the UN Security Council sullies the reputation of this international body, the Leader’s representative to the SNSC added
