No “legal controversy” over 1975 Algiers Accord: Iraqi envoy
Tehran Times Political Desk

TEHRAN -- Iraqi ambassador to Tehran, Mohammad Majid al-Sheik, said here on Tuesday that there is no “legal controversy” between Iran and Iraq over the 1975 Algiers Accord.

The Algiers Accord was inked between Iran and Iraq to settle disputes over the Arvand Rud (Shatt-al-Arab) waterway, which forms the boundary between Iran’s Khuzestan Province and Iraq.

Iraqi President Jalal Talabani allegedly said on December 25 that the agreement signed by Iran and Iraq in 1975 over dividing the Arvand Rud waterway had been rescinded.

He later denied the statement, saying, his remarks about the agreement “have not been conveyed accurately.”

Iraq is seeking to hold a meeting with Iranian officials in coming weeks over dredging of Arvand Rud river, Al-Sheik told the Mehr News Agency.

“The sunken ships on Iran-Iraq border river have caused problems and we want to hold talks with Iran over dredging of the river,” he explained
