TEHRAN (IRNA) -- 22 university students died in flames when a bus carrying students on a tour of war sites dating to 1980-1988 struck a fuel truck on a highway Sunday in western Iran.

The bus, passengers were on a tour called Rahiyan-e-Nur, caught fire immediately after the crash. The truck also burst into flames.
Hundreds of thousands go to these sites every year during the holidays in summer and the Iranian New Year, Nowruz.
The bus was heading back from the tour when it crashed the fuel truck coming from the other direction on a road between Andimeshk and Pol-e-Dokhtar, about 700 km southwest of Tehran.
Many of the bodies of the 22 dead were too badly burned to identify, local police officer said. Seven injured were taken to nearby hospitals.
Iran has one of the worst road safety records in the world.
The high death toll is blamed on unsafe vehicles, disregard for traffic rules and inadequate emergency services.
