Iran-5+1 dialogue could be expanded, analysts say

TEHRAN-– International affairs expert Hossein Sabah-Zangeneh believes that it would be helpful to add some other important issues to future nuclear talks between Tehran and the 5+1 group.

“This can change the prevailing trend and open a new window for dialogue between the two sides”, Sabah-Zangeneh told the Mehr News Agency on Friday.
In an official statement released on Wednesday, Iran announced it welcomes “constructive and fair” talks on its nuclear program with the 5+1 group.
The statement came in response to an invitation from the United States, Britain, China, France, Russia, and Germany for a new round of nuclear talks.
On Thursday, EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana, who represents the major powers in talks with Iran, said Tehran’s statement “contains constructive items and a new opportunity for advancement of talks.”
Sabah-Zangeneh said since political sensitivity toward Iran’s nuclear program is fading and the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is constantly monitoring the country’s atomic activities, Iran and the major powers can discuss other issues in addition to the country’s nuclear program.
--------- Enrichment suspension is out of the question
In any future nuclear talks between Iran and the 5+1 group, it is out of the question to discuss any suspension of uranium enrichment activities by Iran, MP Mohammad Karami-Rad of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee said on Friday.
If Western countries do not wish to lose investment opportunities in Iran, they should sign contracts with Tehran to build nuclear power plants in the country, he suggested.
The West’s offer of a new round of talks signifies that it has decided to “recognize a nuclear Iran”, the MP stated.
Karami-Rad said he believes that removing Iran’s nuclear dossier from the agenda of the UN Security Council and sending it back to the IAEA should be the goal of the talks.
He also said the talks between Iran and the 5+1 group could include some other important issues.
If the Western powers act more positively, Iran will increase its cooperation, but Iran will adopt a different approach if the West decides to return to its previous policy, Karimi-Rad added.
-------- West must seize new opportunity
Hamidreza Taraqi, a senior member of Iran’s Islamic Coalition Party, has urged the West to seize the current opportunity for a new round of nuclear talks and reciprocate Iran’s goodwill gesture.
If the current positive atmosphere continues, it will pave the way for discussions on other major challenges facing the two sides, the former lawmaker said on Thursday.
Association of Former MPs Secretary General Yadollah Eslami said future talks between Iran and the 5+1 group can cover other matters of common concern.
Iran and the major powers are facing numerous regional and international challenges which can be discussed during the talks, he told the Mehr News Agency on Thursday.
However, the talks will only bear fruit if the two sides adopt a win-win approach, he added.
