Argentina sign up Maradona

Diego Maradona has signed a one-year contract to remain in his post as manager of Argentina.

The deal covers the period from November 2008 until October 2009, taking him to the end of 2010 World Cup qualifying.

Maradona initially took on the job without penning a formal deal, but has now completed the relevant paperwork.

Indications suggest that should he lead his country to the World Cup finals in South Africa next summer, then his tenure will be extended.

The Argentine football federation have justified their decision to retain the services of Maradona by highlighting the positive impact he has had on the team and followers of the national side.

However, the former World Cup-winning captain has come in for criticism of late following a number of inept displays from his team.

Argentina have slipped to fourth in South American qualifying and are in danger of missing out on securing their progress.

A fifth place finish would see them enter a play-off, but anything below that would result in elimination for a country usually regarded to be among the challengers for the world crown.
