Iran set to release last UK embassy detainee

Hossein Rassam, the last British embassy detainee, who has been accused by the Iranian authorities of acting against Iran’s national security is set to be released on bail as early as this weekend, according to his lawyer.

Abdolsamad Khorramshahi said Mr. Rassam, whose detention along with eight other embassy staff last month has caused a diplomatic row between the UK and Iran, called his wife on Wednesday evening asking for the bail to be prepared.
Iran arrested nine employees of the British embassy’s political section three weeks ago on allegations that they were the link between the UK intelligence service and the “rioters” protesting against the June 12 presidential election results.
Eight were released gradually on bail and have not been allowed back to work at the embassy. Rassam had earlier told his wife in a telephone conversation that he was being charged with “acting against national security”.
“The fact that there is a bail shows Mr. Rassam will be freed, but with a charge,” Khorramshahi told the FT. He did not disclose how much the bail was.
He said that Iran’s judiciary had not notified him yet about the release or the charge. However, he said the phone call suggested Rassam would “most probably” be freed over the weekend.
