TEHRAN — Ali-Akbar Salehi, the new director of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), said on Friday that the West must close Tehran’s nuclear dossier after six years of wrangling.

“The legal and technical discussions about Iran’s nuclear dossier have been completed and the International Atomic Energy Agency has said this many times, and there is no room left to keep this case open,” Salehi told IRIB.
He said certain Western countries’ expressions of concern about Iran’s nuclear program are “artificial and undocumented” but Iran’s concerns about the nuclear programs of certain countries are “documented”.
However, efforts must be made to reach a consensus and close this dossier, which has been open for six years, as soon as possible, he added.
If “political” wrangling over the issue continues, “all will suffer,” he observed.
“Since the stability of the world is dependent on Iran’s stability, all should make efforts to ensure that this case is closed in a proper manner,” said Iran’s former ambassador to the IAEA headquarters in Vienna.
“The importance of Iran’s status in the region is obvious, and our country holds the golden key in the region,” he stated.
The United States and some of its European allies have been pressing Iran to freeze its uranium enrichment program, but Iran, which is a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), insists that its nuclear program was only established to produce electricity to meet the nation’s growing demands for energy.
The IAEA monitors all of Iran’s nuclear activities through announced and surprise inspections and through surveillance cameras installed at the country’s nuclear facilities.
