TEHRAN -- The tower of Ultan Qalasi, an ancient citadel located at the border city of Parsabad in Ardebil Province, will be unearthed by an archaeological team in the near future.

The team led by Abdorreza Mohajerinejad is currently working south of the citadel, which was built during the late Parthian era.
Some trenches have also been excavated for stratigraphy studies at the site, which was also used during the Safavid era (1501-1722), Mohajerinejad.
The citadel, which covers an area of 40 hectares, is almost intact, he said and added, “It can be converted into a tourist attraction after it is completely unearthed.”
Construction projects by an agroindustrial company have previously caused damage to the citadel.
