Kahrizak defendants will only be identified if convicted: MP

TEHRAN -- According to the law, no one is allowed to reveal the names of the police officers accused of abusing prisoners at the Kahrizak detention center before their trials are completed, MP Farhad Tajari has said.

The law states that only the names of those who are found guilty can be publicized, Tajari, who is a member of the Majlis special committee on the post-election incidents, told the Mehr News Agency on Saturday.
“Because the charges against these people are not comparable with (national) security charges, their names will not be publicized, but these people will be identified if they are convicted,” he explained.
The Kahrizak detention center, located south of Tehran, was closed on the order of Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei because it was substandard.
The chairman of the Majlis special committee on post-election incidents said on August 15 that 12 police officers and judges, who violated the law in dealing with the post-election detainees at the Kahrizak detention center, were sacked and faced prosecution.
The Majlis, the Judiciary, and other relevant government bodies have also agreed that defendants should only be identified if they are convicted, Tajari stated.
However, the Supreme National Security Council decided that the trials of people who were arrested in the post-election unrest should be held publicly and should be broadcast on TV in order to make the process transparent and to inform the general public, the MP added.
“The charges against the defendants (arrested) in the recent incidents are still charges… but people should be informed about current events and (about) the process of the trials. It is expedient to hold these trials publicly. Thus, it is justifiable, even if the rights of some of the defendants are violated,” he said
