Ahmadinejad meets with Pakistani president

NEW YORK (APP) – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has held a meeting with his Pakistani counterpart in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session.

President Ahmadinejad was attending the General Assembly meeting fifth time in last five years.

The two presidents on Friday discussed the forthcoming trilateral summit of Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan that will be held in Islamabad and other bilateral issues between the two brotherly neighboring countries, Pakistani president’s spokesperson Mr. Farhatullah Babar told the media.

The trilateral meeting is expected within weeks in Islamabad but a final date has not yet been worked out, the spokesperson added.

President Zardari said that Pakistan looked forward to work closely with Iran to promote peace and stability in the region and stressed the need for the two countries to cooperate closely on regional and international issues.

The President also emphasized the need to improve bilateral commercial ties and further upgrade the railways and road networks between Iran and Pakistan.

The two presidents also discussed the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project and the need to step up the work over this lucrative project.

President Ahmadinejad reciprocated the sentiments expressed by the President of Pakistan and said that he was looking forward to the trilateral summit in Pakistan.

The Iranian president appreciated Pakistan's efforts in the rehabilitation of internally displaced persons and said that it was a huge challenge which the Pakistan government had handled deftly.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Interior Minister Rehman Malik and Secretary General to the President Zardari Salman Farooqui were also present in the meeting with the Iranian President while the Iranian President was accompanied by the Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and other senior officials.
