FM: Iran will support Iraq’s election
TEHRAN (FNA) - Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki on Sunday underlined Iran's support for elections as well as national unity and security in neighboring Iraq.
""… the upcoming parliamentary elections in Iraq indicate the resolve and determination of the Iraqi people for tightening their grip over their fate and control of affairs and we support this trend,"" Mottaki said in a meeting with Iraqi Minister of Water Resources Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid here in Tehran on Sunday.
He also said that Iran assesses the process of political institutionalization in Iraq as a ""positive trend"".
Commenting upon Tehran's stance on developments in Iraq, the Iranian foreign minister noted, ""We welcome national unity, security and stability of Iraq.""
Regarding the two countries' relations, Mottaki said, ""The proper progress and advancement in all levels of ties has been encouraging. The endorsement of over 150 MoUs (Memoranda of Understanding) between the two countries is an indication of the constructive resolve of the two countries' authorities.""
Mottaki also thanked the Iraqi government for its sympathy for Tehran over the recent terrorist attack in southeastern Iran, and added, ""Iraq's sympathy shows the shared feelings of the two countries' officials in confronting the devilish phenomenon of terrorism, and we appreciate this feeling.""
During the meeting, the Iraqi minister said that trend of bilateral relations between Tehran and Baghdad was progressive and all the Iraqi authorities are resolved to expand and develop all-out ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran.
