Tehran Times Culture Desk

TEHRAN -- Iranian veteran poet of Sacred Defense Mahmud Shahrokhi died at 82 in a Tehran hospital on Sunday. He was suffering gastroenteritis, leading to heart failure after the surgery.

Shahrokhi was born in 1927 in Bam, Kerman Province. He attended school in Bam and later finished in Kerman and Yazd. He progressed through a program in a seminary in Kerman and continued his studies in Yazd with a great mystic scholar named Seyyed Mohammad also known as Majzub.

Shahrokhi also chose the pen name Jazbeh for himself. He later traveled to Najaf with his master to continue studies there, but he suffered lung disorders and returned to Tehran. He began to work in radio after the Islamic Revolution and wrote articles.

He wrote much of his poetry and many articles on Sacred Defense and on issues of sacrifice and martyrdom of the soldiers during the eight-year war between Iran and Iraq. He lost many of his relatives in the devastating earthquake at Bam on December 26, 2003, which worsened his illness.

“In the Mist of Caravan”, “Pain of Anemone”, “Manifestation of Love”, and “Sweet Odor of Garden of Wisdom” are among his credits.
