Assad: Israel must return usurped land
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has called on Israel to return the occupied territories to its owners after the latest round of Middle East talks has failed.
“Peace cannot last unless it restores full rights to their owners in accordance with international resolutions,” he was quoted as saying by Syrian Arab News Agency.
Assad made the remarks during a meeting with US envoy to the Middle East, George Mitchell, on Thursday.
“Syria is not asking for any compromises from Israel to achieve peace, but the usurped land which must fully return to its legitimate owners,” he said.
The Syrian president was referring to the Golan Heights, which Israel occupied in the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed in 1981 in a move not recognized by the international community.
During the 1967 conflict, Israel occupied the West Bank, including East al-Quds (Jerusalem), the Golan Heights in Syria, Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, and the Gaza Strip.
Two days of talks between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas ended with no progress on Wednesday.
