TEHRAN - Iran plans to hold a conference on nuclear disarmament at the end of spring, the deputy secretary of the Supreme National Security Council announced in a televised interview late on Thursday.

SNSC Deputy Secretary Ali Baqeri also spoke about the measures Iran took to deal with the 5+1 group (the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China, and Germany), saying that through intelligent negotiations, Iran was able to convince the 5+1 countries to halt their calls for Iran to freeze or suspend its uranium enrichment program and persuade them to hold more talks with the Islamic Republic.
And all this was accomplished while Iran was under a lot of pressure and dealing with international sanctions, he added.
He went on to say that what Iran proposed in its package of proposals to the West has become a necessity for them in light of recent developments in the region.
Elsewhere in his remarks, he pointed to the Islamic awakening occurring in some countries in the Middle East and North Africa, saying these developments are signs that Iran is winning the soft war with the West.
However, the “lack of leadership” is the reason there are some weaknesses in the popular uprisings currently taking place in the Arab world, he noted.
Baqeri also said that the United States is in a state of confusion due to recent developments in the Middle East and North Africa, and the stances adopted by U.S. officials’ show that they are baffled and are trying to derail the popular movements of the Arab world.
