U.S., Israel behind Syria unrest: Iranian diplomat

TEHRAN – Iranian Ambassador to Russia Reza Sajjadi has said that the United States and the Zionist regime are behind unrest in Syria, predicting that the Syrian government will successfully resolve the issue.

“The important point about the developments in Syria is that this country is in the front line of the campaign against the Zionist regime’s aggressions, and over the past two years the leaders of this regime, with the help of the U.S., have been attempting to provoke unrest in Syria,” he said.
He went on to say that “the U.S. and the Zionist regime are behind most of the incidents that are taking place in Syria.”
“(However) Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is a wise and politically aware man and is able to successfully deal with the sporadic riots in this country,” he said.
The Iranian diplomat also predicted that in the light of the promised reforms, the Syrian citizens who have joined the rioters due to poverty and unemployment will end their protests and support the government.
Following the break-out of the protests in Syria, President Bashar al-Assad introduced a package of reforms which he said would meet the demands of anti-government protesters.
The Syrian president also called on the new government to engage in a national dialogue with people and respect their aspirations for freedom.
However, Assad stressed that the Syrian people should be patient because reforms will not produce instant results.
The U.S. officials have accused Iran of assisting Syria in quelling protesters, a claim that Tehran denies.
Tehran has repeatedly stated that it does not approve of using violence against the people in any country, and that the legitimate demands of the people should be taken into consideration.
However, Tehran says the United States and some other allies of the Zionist regime are seeking to impose the will of the minority in Syria on the majority.
