Former Team Melli captain Javad Nekounam signed a one-year contract to join Iranian side Saipa on Sunday.

Nekounam, who has recently retired from international football, linked with a move back to Esteghlal but he finally ended up with Saipa.

Nekounam represented the Iranian national team 151 times; more than any other player, playing several major tournaments including two World Cups and four Asian Cups.

The 34-year old midfielder signed a three-year contract with Spanish side Osasuna last summer.

Nekounam is Saipa’s fourth signing in the transfer market after Reza Norouzi, Gholamreza Rezaei and Mohammad Vahid Esmaeilbeigi.
