Japan lists support for projects in Iran through UN agencies

The government of Japan has decided to donate $10.13 million through the following four UN agencies considering recent summit and ministry level meetings upon which the Japanese government expressed willingness to provide up to around $3 billion of assistance to Afghanistan in about 5 years from 2012 as confirmed during the Tokyo Conference on Afghanistan and bilateral relations between Japan and Iran.

Following is the list of supports released by the Information and Culture Center of the Japanese embassy in Tehran:

1. UNDP (United Nations Development Program): $1 million

Introducing sustainable agriculture to farmers living around Lake Urmia to save 35% water consumption in the project area.

2. UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees): $3 million

Supporting the voluntary repatriation of Afghan refugees, providing basic needs and essential services to them (education and health), self-reliance, and improved livelihoods.

3. UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime): $1.13 million

Supporting border management enforcement through the provision of drug dogs, search equipment, and training the Anti-Narcotics Police and Customs.

Holding the specialized and technical workshop on UNTOC, countering terrorism and supporting participation in international events and conferences.

4. IOM (International Organization for Migration): $5 million (joint project with IOM in Afghanistan)

Supporting return and finding job for qualified Afghans
Providing emergency life support, medical screening, and transportation to final destination for undocumented Afghan returnees in Afghanistan (IOM in Afghanistan project)
