TEHRAN -- Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mahmud al-Mashhadani called upon Iraq’s neighbors for assistance in promoting security in the war-torn country here on Monday.

“We believe that we will achieve a great victory by following Islamic principles if Iraq’s neighbors, especially Iran, help us promote security in Iraq,” Mashhadani said after being welcomed by his Iranian counterpart Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel upon his arrival in Tehran on Monday for an official three-day visit.

During the visit, he will be trying to put an end to the conspiracies to create a chasm between the two countries, he added.

He expressed hope that Iraq would reach its goals by utilizing Iran’s experiences in various spheres.

The establishment of strong parliamentary relations would pave the way for boosting political, economic, and security ties, noted the Iraqi parliament speaker.

This is Mashhadani’s first foreign visit, indicating the significance the Iraqi government attaches to its relations with Iran.

Haddad-Adel said that Iran has repeatedly declared that it is ready to help promote security in the neighboring country.

The office of al-Mashhadani announced on Monday that fostering parliamentary relations between the two countries and holding talks on regional security and stability are the main reasons for the Iraqi official’s visit to Tehran.

The Iraqi parliament speaker was due to hold meetings with Iranian officials to discuss the latest developments in Iran and the region, the spokesman of Mashhadani’s office told the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).

He went on to say that the talks would help realize the ideal of establishing peace and stability in the region and particularly in Iraq.

Many high-ranking Iraqi officials, including Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, former Iraqi prime minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari, and Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI) Secretary General Abdul-Aziz al-Hakim, have visited Tehran.
