Kenyan media warns new government has no time to waste

NAIROBI (AFP) -- Kenyan newspapers on Friday warned that the swearing in of a new power-sharing government to end a political crisis which claimed some 1,500 lives must not mask simmering issues left to be tackled.
""Even as Kenya marks this great moment, however, there is still the danger of seeing completion of the new government as the final act in the deal,"" the top-selling Daily Nation wrote a day after Prime Minister Raila Odinga and his coalition cabinet took their oaths of office.""This is just the beginning. We must not forget that the National Accord and Reconciliation Act is not just about having our main political protagonists sharing power,"" it added.
Odinga's claims that President Mwai Kibaki stole the December 27 elections sparked tribal fighting, revenge killings and police crackdowns that claimed at least 1,500 lives and displaced hundreds of thousands. The unrest shattering the country's reputation as a bastion of stability in a region beset by conflicts.
Although the killings ended when both leaders agreed to a power-sharing accord that was brokered by former United Nations chief Kofi Annan, they are yet to address troublesome land distribution issues that have fuelled acrimony since independence in 1963.
The Nation pointed out that ""hundreds of thousands of Kenyans who have been made refugees in their own country and across our borders"" must still be resettled. It also called for an inquiry into the disputed election.
The Standard newspaper said the 93-member cabinet should avoid being blinded by the trappings of office.
""They have entered a life of servitude to the republic whose trappings of power, secrecy and luxury have led many a minister to mistake their appointments for feudal titles,"" the Standard said.
""Finding smart ways of solving people's problems and efficient ways of maintaining programs that work, while protecting them from graft, is the key challenge.""
""To all we say, there's not a minute to waste; get cracking.""
