ABU DHABI (AFP) - The United Arab Emirates has nominated an ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency for the first time as part of plans to launch a civilian nuclear program, an official said on Sunday.

""The UAE has nominated Hamad al-Kaabi as ambassador to the IAEA as part of its declared intention to launch a nuclear program for power generation,"" the official told AFP, requesting anonymity.
Kaabi had been chosen as the UAE's pointman on nuclear energy issues in April when Abu Dhabi unveiled a white paper in which it made clear it would import enriched uranium for any reactor it builds.
