Guilt: A woman's constant companion
January 12, 2011 - 0:0
Are you feeling guilty for eating that burger at lunch or still not having sent that thank you note? If so, you're not alone. A new study found that 96 percent of women experience pangs of guilt at least once a day.
Think that's bad? Well, for almost half of women -- the guilty feeling strikes up to four times every 24 hours. Stylist magazine conducted the survey, which found the most common sources for the never-clear-conscience are friendships, relationships, work and body shape.Mothers, you probably already knew this, but 75% of respondents said they've experienced even more guilt since giving birth. (And that's before the kids can even utter their first ‘You’re mean!’)
Men have clean consciences
Want to replace some of those guilty feelings with anger? Listen to this: men barely ever experience such emotions. Experts say this is because women blame themselves for their failures, while men think that external factors are responsible for theirs.
Perhaps feminist author Erica Jong said it best: “Show me a woman who doesn’t feel guilty and I will show you a man.”
