16th Iran-Turkey Joint Security Committee Starts Work

TEHRAN The 16th Iran-Turkey Joint Security Committee held a session here Sunday attended by Director General for Security Affairs of the Iranian Interior Ministry Hussein Motahar and Turkish deputy interior minister. Motahar said that the 5-day meeting is to discuss and adopt decisions on the incidents occurring at border areas, meetings between Iranian and Turkish border guards and problems of the Iranian passengers who travel to Syria via Turkey. The mined areas in border regions, necessity of establishment a number of Turkish outposts opposite the Iranian border outposts, prevention of smuggling of narcotics, livestocks and goods as well as ways of confrontation against terrorism are among other topics to be discussed in the meeting.

Iran and Turkey have 511 km of joint border strip and with respect to outbreak of security incidents, the two countries signed a letter of understanding in 1992 during the visit to Tehran of the then Turkish interior minister. According to the letter of understanding, a joint security committee has been set up to investigate the problems and issues that may arise in this respect.
