UNSC should be restructured: Majlis speaker

altTEHRAN – Iranian Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani has said that the structure of the United Nations Security Council is not based on justice and should undergo fundamental changes.

Larijani made the remarks in an address to the International Peace and Security Committee of the 125th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in the Swiss capital of Bern on Tuesday.

During his speech, Larijani commented on the popular uprisings rolling across the Middle East and North Africa region and said that the United States, which has supported dictatorial and corrupt regimes for decades, should not expect the international community not to criticize them for practicing oppression.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian MP stated that when nations see the double-standard approach of the hegemonistic powers toward nuclear technology and when they see that the Zionist regime, which possesses a nuclear arsenal, is supported by the U.S. and that Iran is threatened for its efforts to access peaceful nuclear technology, they come to the conclusion that the international system is not based on justice.

Larijani also commented on the motto of the meeting, which was “Good Governance,” and said that politics has been the main focus of philosophy since the ancient times.

Philosophers of any era starting from Socrates and Plato to Saint Augustine, Saint Thomas, and Avicenna have regarded justice as the underlying factor of a good government, he added.

In conclusion, Larijani thanked Switzerland for its decision to host the IPU meetings.
