“Pieces of My Grandfather’s Broken Heart” on display at Parisian exhibit

TEHRAN – “The Pieces of My Grandfather’s Broken Heart”, a series of family photos of Iranian photographer Ali Mobasser, is being shown at the Rencontres de la photography d’Arles underway in Paris.

Simindokht Dehqani, the director of Ag Gallery in Tehran, is the curator of Mobasser’s showcase, which is underway in the New Discovery Award Exhibition section, the organizers have announced. 

11 artists under 45 selected by 10 galleries are participating in this section. The New Discovery Award, which is worth €15,000, was presented to Dutch photographer Paulien Oltheten for her series “La Défense, the Venturing Gaze”.

In a statement published on Mobasser’s exhibit, the Rencontres de la photography d’Arles wrote, “In 2016, while clearing out his family home following his father’s death, Ali Mobasser discovered a box of damaged negatives, and the contact prints revealed photos dating from 1959 to 1975 taken by Ali’s grandfather, Mohsen.

“His grandfather’s love of photography had encouraged him to capture intimate family moments of his family using his Rolleiflex camera during the years before Ali had been born. His grandmother, too ill to be taken abroad, died of cancer, and the rest of his family moved to other countries. 

“Ali Mobasser tells their tale by combining large-scale chronological contact prints with an enlarged, broken up, black and white photograph of his grandfather’s heart taken during an open-heart surgery in 1974. ‘The Pieces of My Grandfather’s Broken Heart’ finally releases the love and the painful story of a family it has retained all these years.”

The exhibit that opened on July 2 will be running until September 23, 2018.
