Six Dams, Power Plants to Become Operational in Next 3 Years

TEHRAN Managing Director of Iran's Water and Energy Company Hamid Zargarpour said here on Saturday that six dams and power plants with capacities to generate between 500 to 4,400 megawatts of electricity will come on stream in the next two or three years.
Zargarpour told IRNA that construction of Karkheh Reservoir Dam and Hydro-Electric Power Plant have had a 86 percent progress and is to become operational by March 2001.
He said that Karkheh Hydro-Electric Power Plant includes three 133-megawatt units, with the first one set to start operation by September 2001. The two other units would become operational between three and four months after the first one comes on stream, he added.
Zargarpour said Masjed Soleyman Dam and Hydro-Electric Power Plant with a 86 percent progress, are in their final stages.
The first unit of the 1,000-megawatt power plant of Masjid Soleyman with four 250-megawatt units would become operational by September 2001, and the other units would come on stream between three and four months after that date, according to Zargarpour.
He said the project for expansion of Masjed Soleyman Power Plant with capacity to generate 1,000 megawatts of energy are among other projects of Iran's Water and Energy Company. Contract for construction of the power plant has been signed and letters of credit are to be opened, said Zargarpour, adding that units of the power plant will become operational by 2003 according to schedule.
The 2,000-megawatt Karun-3 Dam and Power Plant, with a 53 percent progress, is under construction as planned, said the official.
The first unit of the project is going to become operational by 2003, he added.
Zargarpour also referred to Gatvand Dam and power plant with a 1,000-megawatt power generation capacity, Karun-4 Reservoir Dam and Power Plant with a 1,000-megawatt capacity (in Charmahal-Bakhtiari Province) and Seymareh Dam and Power Plant (in Ilam Province) with a capacity of 500-megawatt, as the projects being implemented by his company.
