Nigerian Govt. Accounts Unaudited for 20 Years: Vice President

ABUJA Nigerian government over the past 20 years have kept no credible financial accounts, Vice President Atiku Abubakar said here Thursday.
"Financial accountability is completely absent in the public sector," AFP quoted him as telling the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria.
The country's official accounts had last been audited 20 years ago.
Since independence in 1960, successive Nigerian governments had failed to provide the public with enough information about the nation's economy, thereby hampering proper planning, he added.
The new government was seeking to put in place a system that would make Nigeria's public sector accountable and so reduce corruption, he said.
