Mariners Beat White Sox Again for 2-0 Series Lead

CHICAGO The upstart Seattle Mariners grabbed a commanding two games to none lead over the heavily-favored Chicago White Sox in their best-of-five American league play-off series with a 5-2 victory on Wednesday.
After falling in 10 innings to Seattle in Tuesday's series opener, the White Sox, the best team in the American league for virtually the entire season, were held to a mere two hits after the third inning.
Jay Buhner belted a towering solo homer off Chicago starter Mike Sirotka in the fourth inning to snap a 2-2 tie and the Mariners added insurance runs in the fifth and ninth innings.
The additional runs proved unnecessary, however, as Arthur Rhodes, Jose Mesa and Kazuhiro Sasaki combined to shut down the White Sox in relief of Paul Abbott, who picked up the win.
