ALGIERS Algerian security forces killed 13 Islamists in clashes on Friday in a small town near Chlef, some 200 kilometers (125 miles) west of the capital Algiers, AFP quoted the security forces as announcing. They said they had recovered an "important stash of arms and munitions" after the clashes in Oum-Drou, without specifying the circumstances in which the Islamists had been killed. Algerian forces have carried out wide-scale sweeps against Islamists over the past two weeks, local media reported.
