Thai Cabinet Meets for Economic Recovery

BANGKOK Key cabinet ministers and leaders of Thailand's finance sector met Saturday to discuss measures for setting up a national asset management corporation (AMC).

The high-profile meeting in the seaside resort of Hua Hin, 220 kilometers southwest of the capital Bangkok, is expected to break the ground for further procedures to establish the AMC, designed to aid Thailand on its way to economic recovery.

"We expect about 20 to 30 different concepts to be presented by the participants, and the government will then have to decide on which one to adopt as the most suitable," said Finance Minister Suchart Jaovisit.

Delegates from the Bank of Thailand alone have proposed seven different concepts for consideration, but details were not disclosed.

The AMC will deal with a multitude of nonperforming loans which still cripple Thailand's financial sector, and also implement remedies to revive the country's ailing economy as a whole.

Establishing the body was one of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's main election promises, which helped his party, Thai Rak Thai (Thais Love Thais), to gain a landslide victory in the January 6 national election.
