TEHRAN Speaker of the Majlis Hojjatoleslam Mahdi Karrubi here on Monday termed the discussions between Iranian and Tajik officials as very constructive and fruitful. He made the remark while seeing off the visiting Speaker of Tajikistan's National Assembly Mahmadsaid Ubaydullayev. Ubaydullayev left Tehran this morning for the historical city of Shiraz, the capital city of the southern province of Fars. The Tajik speaker will leave for his country on Tuesday after visiting the holy city of Mashhad in northeastern Iran. Also, Iran and Tajikistan signed an agreement on Monday reiterating formation of a broad-based government in war-torn Afghanistan and peaceful settlement of the ongoing conflict. The protocol, inked by Iran's parliamentary speaker and his visiting Tajik counterpart urges an immediate resolution to the human tragedy in next-door Afghanistan. Tehran and Dushanbe also voiced concern over the regional disputes and noted that they should be solved peacefully. The call comes after last Friday's visit to Dushanbe of Iranian Defense Minister Rear-Admiral Ali Shamkhani who said that the Afghan problem cannot be settled by military means. "This is why Tajikistan and Iran are unanimous in their opinion that a political dialogue between the warring Afghan parties should be stepped up," the agency quoted Shamkhani as telling journalists after the end of the talks with his Tajik counterpart Sherali Khairulloyev.
