TEHRAN What sort of negative effects on political development and people's participation are created by statements to the effect that President Mohammad Khatami is the only hope of the reformists in the upcoming presidential elections in June? Which of the candidates could be a credible rival of Khatami and make a race of the elections?

The so-called reformists think that Khatami is the only correct choice for the post. This is the reason why they have, in different ways, demanded that Khatami announce his candidacy.

Meanwhile, some political experts call such actions contrary to the ideas of political development proposed by Khatami himself.

Talking to the TEHRAN TIMES, pro-reform MP Rasoul Montajebnia said, "Khatami has certain character traits and talents that cannot be found in any other member of the 2nd Khordad Front."

"Although the 2nd Khordad Front considers Khatami to be the best person for the post, this does not mean that Khatami is the only hope of the group.

"There are lots of people who are pious and loyal to the system and the revolution, but they are less talented than Khatami. If Khatami does not participate in the elections, this is not the end of the 2nd Khordad Front."

The member of the reformist Majma'-e Rouhaniyoun Mobarez (MRM) said he could not think of any other candidate to replace Khatami if he decides not to run, but added that they would definitely introduce a candidate.

Asked who was the conservative candidate with the best chance of winning, Montajebnia said, "Currently the political climate of the country is such that people will not accept the rule of the conservatives. This faction should forget about participating in the elections."

He added, "Conservatives may be successful in 10 or 20 years."
