The recent developments in France indicate that most of the French politicians and government officials are involved in financial corruption, graft and abuse of their positions or influence. But such violations are revealed only when there is a power struggle between these politicians on the eve of parliamentary and presidential elections.

During the recent days, revelations of corruption have overshadowed the political and social developments in France, to such an extent that political observers believe tarnishing the prestige of leading parties and their candidates will disappoint and disenchant the French voters and lead to a low turnout in the forthcoming presidential elections.

Last Friday, the former French interior minister and Democratic Union Party leader was summoned to the Paris Judiciary to face charges of embezzlement and involvement in smuggling of arms to Angola. This happened just a few days after he announced his candidacy for the next presidential elections.

The former minister is not the only famous French politician involved in corruption scandals. During recent weeks, French President Jacques Chirac was prosecuted on charges of illegal dealings with construction contractors at the time when he was the Mayor of Paris. This caused a serious political controversy, and Chirac asked the French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin to intervene and halt the prosecution. But his request had no result. Consequently, Chirac refused to appear before the court to answer the charges.

It seems that politicians of certain Western countries who always level allegations of human right abuses and administrative corruption against developing nations are themselves deeply involved in all sorts of corruption and official sleaze. But the real face of these politicians is exposed only when there is rivalry for high government positions in those countries.
