JAKARTA -- An Indonesian court on Wednesday sentenced to life imprisonment two men accused of killing the judge who convicted former President Suharto's favorite son Tommy.

Prosecutors said Noval Hadad and Maulawarman had meticulously planned and conducted the murder in broad daylight of Supreme Court Judge Syafiuddin Kartasasmita on an inner-city Jakarta Street last July.

"The defendants are proven guilty of premeditated murder and wrongly using firearms...(we) punish them to life imprisonment," said Chief Judge Amiruddin Zakaria, who also leads the related trial of the ex-president's favorite son.

Kartasasmita had sentenced Tommy to 18 months in jail over a land scam almost a year before his death.

Tommy Suharto's own trial, in which he is accused of masterminding the drive-by shooting as well as possessing firearms, is set to resume in a separate courtroom later on Wednesday. He has denied any wrongdoing.

Last week prosecutors asked for 14 years in jail for each of the two men although they could have faced a maximum penalty of death.

Some analysts said earlier if the two were found guilty the severity of their sentence could give some indication of the punishment in store for Tommy if his case goes against him.

The trials are widely seen as a test of whether President Megawati Sukarnoputri and her government are committed to revamping Indonesia's widely criticized judicial system.
