TEHRAN -- Judiciary Chief, Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi on Wednesday unveiled his plan to control the arbitrary power of the judges.

Addressing an 'International Conference Studying Alternatives for Imprisonment', Ayatollah Shahroudi put forward a dramatic reform plan, unprecedented since taking office.

Upon taking the office, Ayatollah Shahroudi had promised to rebuild, as he put it, 'the ruins of the justice system' and the public was waiting for his reform program.

He told the conference that arbitrary power the judges enjoy in Iran's judicial system should end, because it has caused more corruption in the past.

Shahroudi also said that temporary detention also lacks legal justification and should be terminated from the judicial procedure.

Ayatollah Shahroudi noted that the judges have been empowered to sentence temporary prison terms for the defendants from three days to nine months which is un-Islamic and the cause of corruption in the justice system.

Ayatollah Shahroudi challenged as non-Islamic, the current legal codes and said that the Islamic Sharia law has prescribed imprisonment for very specific cases of crimes.

He strongly dismissed the temporary detention currently in force in Iran as illegal from the Islamic point of view, IRNA reported.

Legal experts welcomed Ayatollah Shahroudi's reform program and hoped that it will be put into practice. They said it will be a dramatic step forward to better administration of justice.
