Sunni clerics join Shiite religious leaders in backing Islamic Republic

TEHRAN – Hundreds of Sunni religious scholars in Iran’s southern Hormozgan Province have issued a declaration of firm and informed support for the Islamic Republic and the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, revealing a broad national consensus in the face of recent U.S.-backed unrest.

In a statement released on Sunday, roughly 240 Sunni clerics emphasized that unity within the Islamic Ummah and adherence to religious leadership remain central to Iran’s dignity, stability and long-term progress. They said the sacrifices of those killed in defense of the country and the revolution continue to serve as a moral compass for preserving the Islamic Republic.

“The enemies of Islam and Iran are seeking to weaken national cohesion through hybrid warfare, psychological operations and coordinated media campaigns,” the statement said. “Yet the aware and united Iranian nation has repeatedly proven its ability to neutralize these plots.”

The clerics reaffirmed their support for velayat-e faqih — the system of governance under the supreme religious jurisprudent — describing it as a cornerstone of Iran’s political and religious order. They also called for deeper solidarity among all segments of society, stressing that safeguarding the achievements of the Islamic Republic requires unity across sectarian, ethnic and social lines.

Their position echoes similar declarations from senior Shiite clerics across Iran, including religious authorities in Qom and Mashhad, who in recent weeks have reiterated their backing for the Islamic Republic and condemned Western-backed efforts to destabilize the country through violence. Prominent Shiite scholars have described recent unrest in the country as part of a broader foreign-driven campaign aimed at eroding Iran’s religious and political foundations.
