The Epstein scandal: Netanyahu-Barak feud exposes Israel’s murky elite ties

February 7, 2026 - 19:6

TEHRAN – The recent statements by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on former premier Ehud Barak’s ties to Jeffrey Epstein highlight not only a personal and political rift but also illustrate the complex and sometimes murky connections between prominent Israeli figures and the disgraced financier.

Netanyahu’s denial of the theories suggesting that Epstein worked for Israeli intelligence is understandable from a political standpoint, especially given the public nature of the rift between him and Barak. Netanyahu’s framing of Barak’s ties to Epstein as proof that he could not have been an Israeli agent seems designed to discredit any suspicions regarding Israel’s involvement in Epstein's operations. However, it also casts a long shadow on the credibility of these claims and raises questions about the opaque nature of the Israeli political elite’s connections with Epstein and others in his network.

The Israeli establishment has long been divided on several fronts, and this particular issue appears to add another layer of complexity.

Netanyahu’s assertion that Barak's association with Epstein undermines the possibility of Israeli intelligence involvement begs further scrutiny, particularly given the historical and often speculative connections between Epstein’s associates and Israel’s intelligence community.

Indeed, some of the revelations in the recently released Epstein files suggest that Epstein had ties to a wide range of influential figures, including many who have held positions of power in Israel. While there is no direct evidence linking Barak or any Israeli officials to Epstein’s illicit activities, it is hard to ignore the broader context of the networks that Epstein navigated — some of which had close ties to Israel.

Other documents in the Epstein file, for instance, describe witness interviews that place U.S. President Donald Trump squarely within the social circles built by Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell. Maxwell, daughter of the powerful media mogul Robert Maxwell, was deeply connected to Israeli intelligence networks. Robert Maxwell’s extensive influence on Israeli affairs, coupled with his funeral in Jerusalem (al-Quds), attended by top Israeli officials, points to the long-standing and intricate relationships between Israel’s political and intelligence apparatus and the broader global elite circles Epstein had access to.

While Netanyahu’s claim that Epstein did not work for Israeli intelligence is plausible within the context of available evidence, the broader and more troubling question arises: How deeply did Israeli officials — past and present — intertwine with the forces that Epstein cultivated? Given Robert Maxwell's background and influence, and Ghislaine Maxwell’s ties to Israeli intelligence, it’s difficult to dismiss the possibility that Epstein’s activities may have had connections to larger geopolitical maneuverings, including those involving Israel.

The situation is further complicated by Netanyahu and Barak’s longstanding feud, with Barak being an outspoken critic of Netanyahu’s government. Barak’s outspoken stance on issues like the judiciary overhaul has placed him at odds with Netanyahu, making his ties to Epstein a convenient political target. Netanyahu’s statements are thus likely more politically motivated than factually conclusive, but they still invite further questions about the opaque relationships at play.

These developments underscore a deeper concern: as Epstein’s network continues to unravel through legal and political disclosures, the relationship between Israel’s political and intelligence elite and individuals like Maxwell and Epstein deserves careful scrutiny.
