TEHRAN -- The 79th martyrdom anniversary of Mirza Kouchak Khan Jangali, the leader of the Jungle Struggle in northern Iran, was commemorated in a ceremony held in Rasht, the capital city of Gilan Province, Thursday.

Over 300 researchers, writers, and political and cultural figures attended the ceremony.

The statue of Mirza Kouchak Khan in Martyrs Square of Rasht was also showered with flowers and the Naval Forces band of Gilan Province played in honor of the famous combatant.

Mirza Kouchak Khan Jangali, Younes, was born in Rasht in the year 1298 lunar Hijra. After completing his studies in Tehran, he joined the Constitution Movement fighting against the regime of Mohammadali Shah.

Following seven years of struggle, the Jungle Movement failed because of the martyrdom of many combatants and the treachery of some of the members. Mirza died of cold in the snow at the foot of Gilvan Mountain. He was beheaded afterwards by the government forces.
