Poverty Eradication Should Be UN's Main Goal: Assadi
Assadi said that the developing countries are seriously following the United Nation's operational activities. He added that the international atmosphere for this kind of UN activity has changed and that in fact it is being restricted.
He pointed to issues such as the impact and results of the globalization process and the increase in the gap between the poor and the rich within countries and in societies.
"Poverty eradication should be the main operational activity of the United Nations and it should be carried out seriously," he said.
"The United Nations can help reduce poverty by following correct policies. Even though the main UN restriction in this case is the decline in development aid and multilateral sources of funding," Assadi continued.
Assadi stressed the necessity of cooperation between developing countries in the planning, supervising and evaluation of United Nations operational activities. The head of the G77 stressed the importance of economic and technical cooperation between the developing countries and said, "The G77 seriously wants to enforce the relevant part in the United Nations Development Plan (UNDP)."
The main UN organization responsible for development plans is the UNDP. It has offices in most developing countries.
