PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) -- New Jersey has the highest median income as well as some of the deepest poverty in the United States, according to a new Census Bureau data.
The 2005 report on income, poverty and health insurance coverage found New Jersey's median household income was $61,672, the highest in the country, and almost twice that of bottom-ranked Mississippi with $32,938.
In the Northeast as a whole, the median household income was $50,882, a 2.9 percent increase from 2004, the survey found.
Despite New Jersey's relative wealth, the city of Camden had the nation's highest poverty rate -- 44 percent – among areas with a population of between 65,000 and 249,999. That compares with a national poverty rate of 12.6 percent in 2005.
Among cities of that size, Camden had the lowest median household income -- $18,007 -- compared with a high of $101,022 in Pleasanton, California.
