Europe faces summer travel chaos as jet fuel crisis deepens
TEHRAN- Europe is bracing for a devastating summer travel crisis as a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz sends jet fuel prices skyrocketing, threatening mass flight cancellations and airline bankruptcies, according to a report by Deutsche Welle.
The crisis began following US and Israeli strikes on Iran in February. In retaliation, Iranian forces blocked the strategic waterway, through which one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas tankers pass, while Western naval operations have further restricted traffic. The resulting supply shock has more than doubled jet fuel prices, forcing carriers into a desperate struggle for survival.
Industry analysts warn that European holidaymakers may be forced to scrap their travel plans altogether as airlines pass on soaring costs through significantly higher ticket prices. Smaller and mid-sized carriers are particularly vulnerable, with several already on the brink of insolvency.
“Without immediate intervention, we will see a wave of bankruptcies before summer even begins,” an aviation source told this newspaper. The crisis could leave millions stranded or grounded, dealing a heavy blow to southern Europe’s tourism-dependent economies. Passengers are urged to book early, or reconsider flying altogether.
