TEHRAN The United Nations (UN) is to dispatch a delegation to Iran in order to investigate and evaluate the performance of the Iranian Health Ministry's programs for the prevention and control of AIDS in Iran.

The decision was made in the Consulting Assembly for Establishing the Global AIDS-Fighting Fund in Geneva on Monday.

The assembly has also considered Iran's suggestions for the establishment of education centers for discouraging irresponsible and dangerous social behavior.

The Head of Iran's Center for Disease Control of the Health Ministry, Dr. Mohammad-Mahdi Gouya, who is also the head of Iran's delegation to the above-mentioned council, said that AIDS is one of those diseases that is spread mostly by irresponsible and dangerous behavior.

He added that AIDs is considered to be a behavioral disease and that programs for preventing and controlling this disease are much more difficult than those for other infectious diseases and require a long period of time and sufficient budget.

Gouya also said that fighting the spread of a behavioral disease is more difficult and slower than fighting the spread of other diseases and that it would be wiser for policy makers to strongly support prevention and control measures.

He added that solving the problems of behavioral diseases is not merely the duty of one organization or ministry, but it is necessary that all organizations involved cooperate with each other.

Gouya emphasized that using addictive drugs is one of the most dangerous and rapid ways of spreading AIDS and that the issue should be addressed at the international level. yzw
