Tehran-- Majlis Speaker Mehdi Karroubi announced here on Sunday that President Seyd Mohammad Khatami is merely seeking the enforcement of Constitution when the issue of presidential authorities is brought up.

Addressing the parliamentary correspondent of one of the local dailies at the conclusion of Sunday's open session of Majlis, Karroubi said that President Khatami's speech on Wednesday (August 28) press conference has raised some questions.

President Khatami had announced during the said press conference that he would submit a bill to the Majlis in connection with the clarification of presidential authorities.

Karroubi underlined, "the issue of presidential authorities should certainly be discussed within the framework of the Constitution." "Additional presidential authorities should be aimed either at solving people's difficulties or in connection with approaching some institutions," he said in reply to a question.

Another correspondent told the Majlis speaker that Shiraz friday Prayer Leader Ha'eri Shirazi has rejected the statements attributed to him on the criticism directed against the expediency council.

Addressing Karroubi, he questioned him about his having made comments on Ha'eri Shirazi in Majlis without having verified what he was going to say, contrary to what he had said about the journalist Aghajari. Karroubi said in reply, "I will investigate the issue and will bring it up in an open session in case his claim is true. after all, we are friends."

Once Karroubi was asked why he had not talked to him before making comments about him, he said that what is brought up in the papers should be responded in a similar way. On the other hand, private responses should be made in private.
