TEHRAN -- “Certainly Shajarian is a phenomenon in the history of Persian music and is an able and pioneering vocalist but we should not ignore other factors which have resulted in the emergence of such a prominent artist,” musician Jamal Samavati told MNA.
We should not forget that in addition to Shajarian’s superb talent in the field of traditional music, his distinctive performance and his own particular genius, he is indebted to other illustrious writers and poets who have granted him use of their prime compositions. Shajarian’s magnificent songs are the distillation of the works of other prominent artists, he mentioned. As time goes by the type of Master Shajarian’s listeners is changing and his audiences are not able to appreciate the high standard and sophistication of his work. In some concerts the audiences become so weary that they cannot remain on their seats but they still applaud the performances continuously. This behavior is rooted in social psychology, he added.
Samavati, who plays the Setar and Tar (Iranian musical instruments), concluded that the audiences are not reliable assessors and liable to make misjudgments. They are not interested in critical analysis of the works but are just consumers
