Hundreds killed in Sudan landslide as entire village erased

Hundreds have died after a landslide buried the village of Tarseen in Sudan’s Marra Mountains, officials and aid agencies said.

The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army, a Darfur-based rebel group, reported around 1,000 deaths, while the UN confirmed at least 370 fatalities.

Heavy rains triggered the disaster on Sunday, and according to local reports, only one person from the village survived. Reaching the area remains extremely difficult.

The tragedy deepens Sudan’s crisis as war between the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has killed up to 150,000 and displaced millions.
