HONOLULU Swimming in a torrential downpour and battling rough seas, Spain's David Meca and Dutchwoman Edith van Dyk emerged victorious in Thursday's 10-kilometer competition at the first FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships. Meca had already captured the silver medal in the men's 5km on Tuesday.
Germany won the gold in the three-person 10km team competition, just ahead of Russia and the United States, with a mere 36 seconds separating the top three teams.
The men's race was tightly contested until the final 200 meters when Meca pulled away to win in one hour, 57 minutes, 10.50 seconds, less than four seconds ahead of Bulgaria's Petar Stoychev. Russia's Evgueni Bezroutchenko, who won Tuesday's 5km, finished third, another half second back. Only seven seconds separated the top 10 finishers. Holland's Van Dyk had an easier time in winning the women's race, finishing in 2:06:44.44, almost a minute ahead of Italy's Melissa Pasquali. Peggy Buchse, the German who won Tuesday's women's 5km, took the bronze.
