LONDON A Persian rug belonging to Sigmund Freud went for more than 64,000 pounds (92,000 dollars, 102,000 euros) Thursday at an auction organized by Christies, London. The beige rug once furnished Freud's dining room in London -- which also served as a consulting room for the founder of psychoanalysis. The carpet was bought by an anonymous bidder during an auction of Oriental rugs. The Austrian psychiatrist moved to Maresfield Gardens in London in 1938 when Austria was annexed by the Nazis. He died there a year later, aged 83, after a 16-year struggle with cancer. Freud's famous couch, which was also in his house in Hampstead, is now on view at the Tate Modern Art Gallery in London, AFP said.
