TEHRAN The head of election headquarters of presidential candidate Ahmad Tavakkoli criticized some political currents for not fielding presidential candidates in the June-8 presidential elections.

Abbas Salimi Namin, who is also the secretary general of the Muslim Journalists Association, was speaking at Tavakkoli's election headquarters in the holy city of Mashhad on Saturday night.

He said that some political currents are afflicted with extreme political cautiousness, adding that they have not fielded candidates in order not to offend others.

Addressing these political currents, he said, "Considering that you have fielded only seven candidates and are calling on people to vote for anyone they wish, you should no longer have claims of political progressiveness."

He said that to be politically progressive means that political groups should bravely field their candidates and express their reasons for their choice.

The secretary general of the Muslim Journalists Association considered the action of these political groups contrary to the guidelines of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution.

Salimi stressed that the aim of elections should be to promote social growth and public awareness. "If political currents manage to do this, they have done a very good job."

Pointing to the fact that the real winners in elections are always the people, he said that it is not so important which candidate is elected president.

Answering a question about the strong points of Tavakkoli in comparison with the other candidates, Salimi said that Tavakoli does not depend on any political parties, adding that he is also sincere and thoughtful and holds specific stances on violations.
